update on my girl

I wanted to post a few pictures of a very fashionable girl! As soon as a camera is on her, she gets a goofy smile- similar to her mother, I suppose.

Lil is 5 now and is amazingly smart. Her favorite thing to do is to color. Her favorite food is cake.

She has to wear navy, khaki, white, or light blue to her school, but I try to keep her clothes good and comfey.
Cool striped pants
adorable ruffled pants

Lil got to go to Grandma Gretchen's for the weekend. She made sugar cookies shaped like princess stuff and cooked crepes.

Lilyism- Last night I noticed she may need to use the bathroom, so I told her to listen to her body and to go into the bathroom. Her reply: 'you're not the boss of my butt'.

That is all.

Summertime

I promise, I'll try to write more regularly- we have so much going on and I must remember to share...

Lily's had the Summer off of school, which she really needed.  She has been a busy girl. She's taken two sessions of Critter Camp at the Zoo and is now a Guppy in swimming lessons! Her baths take longer because she's been practicing putting her face in the water.
She's gotten to spend time with the Grandmas for longer periods of time, too. After a week with Grandma Joyce and her cousins, she was whipped!

She's been spending lots of time with Steve this Summer, too, resulting in her learned a few new phrases along the way thanks to good ol' Dad!

I've been doing a bit of work at the wood studio on a Little Free Library and she came with me one day to help...

Rowan has had a good Summer so far, I guess. He's been happy for the most part and has been attending school during June and July. He's pretty much a stud.

The problem is that he isn't gaining any weight. He's been visiting Gillette Children's Hospital for almost two years now and has lost weight since his first visit.

When he doesn't have an appetite, he doesn't get enough fluids, food and doesn't get any of his medicines. Then it's a cycle of trying to get him back on track. And sadly, we don't really know what medicines and doses are doing the job for him. He pretty much never gets his night medicines.

They decided he needs a G-tube and we now have an appointment to meet with his surgeon and with his Neurologist on Monday, July 28.

During his last appointment, Steve conferenced me so I could hear what he and Dr. Norberg were discussing and when she said her recommendation is that we fast-track the tube, I was overwhelmed with sadness. I wasn't prepared to hear that on the call, so it did take me some time to process. Once she explained that Rowan would get all of the nutrients and fluids he needs as well as his medicines- and that he'll still be able to enjoy some foods, I felt comforted.

He's been choking on more and more meals lately and it's been taking him longer to swallow, so I really do think it's time. I'll keep you all in the loop on this.

And finally, here is a picture Lily drew of Animal (from Sesame Street) with his friend- I think it's amazing and wanted to share it.

I definitely have more to share... Our Fourth of July was great fun- and Steve is moving to Philly in 8 short days.

Stay tuned.

When the boss is away....

Well folks, the boss has left the building.

Steve and I are borderline giddy with the anticipation of not being berated, glared at or corrected. The tension in the house has subsided due to the removal of the egg shells we've walked upon for so long.

No longer must we live in constant fear of saying the wrong thing- or of not hearing correctly. (In case you're wondering- not hearing correctly is a huge deal. If you accidentally don't hear something the soft-spoken boss says, you're really in for it.)

Threats of physical violence are behind us.

The boss has gone to visit the Grandmas.

Skinny Love and Sunshine

Whenever I hear the song, Skinny Love, by Bon Iver, I think of sweet Rowan. He's my darling, skinny little love...

He's been doing really well lately. We ordered his orthotics for his feet a while back- then had to have him re-cast, so we've been anxiously waiting for them to come in. He hasn't been able to use a stander for months now, and I can tell his frail legs have become weaker. We were lucky enough to get a new stander for the house, so once we get his shoes situated, he'll be able to stand again.

He recently started a new medicine called Felbamate. It's supposed to help with seizures... along with all the others he's currently on: Keppra, Phenobarbatol, Sabril, and the VNS and Ketogenic Diet. We hope to lower his diet ratios and the Keppra I guess.  The problem now is that a side-effect of the Felbamate is loss of appetite. That is one thing our Rowan doesn't need. He's already so thin, and now he has little interest in eating or drinking.

I spoke with the Children's Hospital today and they'll put him on a medicine designed to increase appetite. I guess I hope this helps, but I'm saddened that we have to add yet another medicine into his routine.

He's been very smart lately, though, and is a budding musician- like his daddy...

What's new with Lily you ask?
The weather has finally gotten nicer, so we were able to dig her bicycle out of the garage.  Take a look at how well she did!!

She was so proud of herself last night. She is, after all, 5 now....

Lily's been sweet as pie lately- most of the time.  When she isn't sweet, she's impressively sassy. Her personality is similar to mine in that she is more of an introvert, she tires if she has to run all over and then needs to be home to 'touch base'. Sadly, her grumpiness is also familiar. I don't want to take full credit, but probably should.

I'll try to update more regularly- Love you all.

Lily rocks out

Lily had her End of Year program at school last week and I recorded this awesome video for you all to watch! She's a rocker:)

equals

I was watching Steve wrestle with the kids the other night- a pretty regular occurrence in our house- and, through the giggles and squeals I thought, 'what a wonderful thing it is for our children to have a daddy that gets physical with them'.  It's as if they need it. They both love to be tossed around and to be roughed up. And it's good for Steve, too.
I was watching the kids lying on the floor next to each other while Steve tickled them- they were giggling and were brother and sister. Equals in the fun. Equals in the enjoyment of their daddy.

Dear Lily

Dear Lily-

You're in the bathtub and I'm sitting on the toilet typing.  We had a lovely weekend with Grandma and Grandpa Hammer and you were such a great kid. You're so grown-up. It surprises me sometimes just how much you know and how much you can do. I love your personality and your spunky little spirit. I relate to you and feel such a connection to you when you get mad, frustrated, sad, embarrassed.... How you act and react during those times seems exactly how I'd like to. You can verbalize your frustrations in ways I can't (because screaming and hitting isn't acceptable when you're an adult) and I just love you for your authenticity. I doubt this makes sense- I'm trying to say-quite un-elequently that- I love you just how you are and that I think we have very similar personalities. Your daddy sees it, too, and seems to know what he's in for.

You've taken to being scared of pretty much everything lately. It started with a plastic ghost around Halloween and has spread to owls, snowmen, our bedroom lamps and our guitar.  We had to take down all of the owl decals on your walls and throw them away. You'll no longer drink out of a cup that has an owl on it. We usually sleep together on Friday nights, but you won't even go into our room any longer because you swear there are scary dogs on our lamps. The guitar, though... we haven't figured that one out yet.

I want you to know how much I love you. I have been thinking a lot lately about whether we add pressure to you because of your brother's condition.  I wonder if we push you more. You're a bright kid and we want to give you all opportunities to be an empathetic, smart, cultured kid... I just want to make sure we're not trying to compensate for Rowan's Lissencephaly and inability to do certain things by encouraging you to take on more?? I'm sure I'm over-thinking this, but I want to make sure we always remember that you're you independent of him and that we don't think of you as the one with abilities, the one who will go to school, the one who will be in sports. You're an amazing kid and, again, I love you just as you are.

Love, Mommy

a new bed for Lily

Better late than never on this one, I guess?

A couple months ago, I made this bed for sweet little Lily. This wasn't exactly prompted by the kindness of my heart and a desire to sweat in the heat of August at my favorite wood studio... rather it was an idea that popped into my head after about 6 strait months of her getting up in the middle of the night and coming to wake me up.  And even then, I was inches from buying a loft bed online.  Steve saved the day, though, and told me to simmer down, not click buy, and go to sleep. Then next day I had the idea to make her a bed.

All told, the frame of this bed cost us $80.  I worked for about 24 total hours on it.

Lily loves it and no longer wakes us up, so I'd consider this one a success!!

I found the plans at AnaWhite.com and Jim helped me build it for my girl.

Girls Trip!

A few weeks ago Lily and I went on a girls trip to Grandma Gretchen's and Grandpa Doug's house and lake cabin. Lily and I had a lovely time hanging out and seeing people we love at the lake.

Grandpa took Lily fishing...

I just love the look on my Dad's face!
Grandma Gretchen was there and Grandma and Grandpa GG came out, but for some reason I failed to snap adequate pictures of them.  Boo me.

1st Day of Pre-School

Big changes this week for the Mayer Hammer family! Lily started pre-school and was so darned excited.  Mainly, she was looking forward to her new cubby where she'd be able to put all of her things.  About a month ago she said, 'I'm SO excited for my new cubby!' Then she asked me, 'What's a cubby, Mommy?'

Anyway, she got her school clothes, packed her lunch and school supplies, and was off.

Monday wasn't a sad day for Steve or I at all. We're so happy for Lily's new journey. Can you believe how grown up she is?

Pre-school, here we come!!

The past two weeks I've been pretty obsessed with this whole pre-school thing... When is the right time? How do you select the right school?

I'm sure some will think- 'sheesh, your kid is three-and-a-half years old, don't worry.'  And I'm not worried, but I have had thoughts rolling through my head that pertain to her future. (Steve was involved in this, too... but I'll just speak for myself).  I have been wondering what kind of life I'd like for my daughter- what kind of opportunities I'd like her to have- and how I can help provide her with all things necessary to make her a smart, kind, and thoughtful person.

I've been fortunate to spend quality time around a lot of people whom I consider to be educated, wise, well-rounded, respectful of other cultures and races, open to new and different experiences, and on and on. I've spent time with people I wish I could be more like, and whom I would love my daughter to be like.

Me? I'm often hesitant to try new things and feel I've led a fairly sheltered life.  Some of this is because of my personality and some because of where I grew up.  I went to a very small school from kindergarten through my senior year- graduated with 26 in my class- and went to a small University 17 miles from my hometown.  I just didn't have the drive to experience more. Now I do, though.

Bottom line is that I want Lily to do as much as she wants to do, to travel, to experience all she can- and I want to support her in that.

So, Steve and I have decided to enroll her in the Children's Montessori Center in Fargo.  We took Lily there today to tour it and to meet her new teacher. She took to it as we expected she would; she jumped right in and played outside with her new friends.  But what she was most excited about was the cubbies. That is huge for her- she talks about her cubby all the time.  So if anything, we've got that!!

Here is a video of her new school! (This must have auto-corrected to Lilly...by the way)

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Montessori programs...

Spa day with Lily

I think both Steve and I really covet our special one on one time with Lily. His favorite thing to do with her is to take her on runs with him and to the park to play. It's their thing, and is so good for their relationship.
Lily and I love to do art projects and to bake sweets- we get up early on weekend mornings and pick out a recipe or a project and get to work!
Last week, though, Lily and I got to spend some quality time together at a spa so she could have her nails painted. I'm not fussy about my nails at all and never paint them, but I thought Lil would love the pampering and the fact that she could pick her own colors.

She had a blast and chose pink for her fingernails and brown for her toenails.

Here she is getting her toenails painted. Love that big smile!

I think she smiled the entire time.

And here's a video I took of sweet Lily getting her Manicure:

Gotta love this kid...
What a fun day!

Lily likes ballet school

There is a ballet school here in Fargo that lets little girls and boys go to try it out before signing up.  What a great idea!

About 6 months ago, we took Lily to 'gymnastics school' and wish they'd had that option.  There were way too many kids and it was quite chaotic- Lily couldn't focus and ended up getting scolded (by us, not the teachers).  It became apparent she wasn't ready for either that environment or for that particular activity.
So the other day when Lily was asked if she'd enjoy trying out ballet school, she said, 'Yes'. Kate and Gene took her to her first class...

Here are a couple of videos.

She's the little girl in the pink clothes.

And another:

I have to admit, I've watched these- and the 5 others- way too many times. I'm so proud of her. I just can't believe what a big girl she is and how mature she seems.  Makes me a tad sad, but again- I'm so darned proud of our little Lily.

How does swearing even work?!

Speaking of Cussing, I've been wondering what you all think about the topic. Specifically as it relates to kids... your own kids.
Steve and I have our opinions- we really don't have a problem with it in most regards. He can probably speak to this a bit better than I can, though, being a smarty-pants PhD student who's studied linguistics quite extensively.

We feel that words are just words- the fact that some are 'naughty' is kind of weird to me. I get it, you know... I understand it... kind of.

But really, I don't. Why are some bad? Why is it offensive to use certain words?
I found an interesting article about swearing that helps a bit.

But still I wonder... I often have a pretty colorful vocabulary. It got much better once I had children as I'm sure happens to lots of people. I grew up in a home where my father didn't hold back from swearing- but even he's better now that he's got Grand-kids.

Let me tell you a story:
Our beautiful daughter, Lily, is amazingly smart, very sweet, and srong-willed. (In my opinion) She's not the irritating type of strong-willed. She's not the kid that won't do anything or that throws fits constantly bossing around the entire house.  She's very specific about her choices- and in instances when she does not want to apologize for something, she just won't do it.

She'll stay in time-out for a while refusing offers to be let out for apologizing. She'll scream and cry and say, 'I'm ready to get out now!' yet refuses to humble herself enough to apologize, perhaps because she doesn't mean it.

There have been two instances where she's gotten so frustrated she screams, 'DAMMIT, DAMMIT, DAMMIT!'. Always three times. Always toward the end of the time-out instance. And ALWAYS in context.

She isn't dropping the bomb for no reason- she's really mad!

And in a way, I respect her for that. Now I'm sure Grandmas will disagree with me or may shake their heads in disapproval.  So let it be known that I'm still torn on this one...
What I'm really wondering is how to work through this with her as she grows.
Steve and I believe that swear-words are only words, but understand that they offend some and that we should respect that. We want to teach her the same.

For example; I was putting Lily in her carseat the other day and she said, 'dammit'. I explained to her that some people don't like that word- and that Grandma Joyce (whom we were traveling to see) will not like Lily saying that. Later that afternoon she told me, 'Grandma Joyce doesn't like it when you say Goddammit'. So she remembered and didn't say it at Grandma Joyce's house.

How do you all feel about cussing?

Cuss words and crazy-eyes

Dear Lily-
I don't want you to think we've forgotten about you! How could we possibly?
You, my dear, are something else lately... You're such a lovely mix of sweet, sassy, smart, angry, kind, independent, and cute.

A couple stories:
The other day I was kneeling down doing something and you looked at me, grabbed my cheeks in your hands and said, 'mommy, do you have brown eyes?' and I said, 'Yes.' You said, 'they're crazy eyes! You're so gorgeous.'
I wasn't sure whether to be flattered or not! It was funny.

Your daddy put you in time-out a few evenings back because you were hitting. You got so angry and screamed, 'I want out of time-out RIGHT NOW, daddy!'. He asked you if you were ready to apologize and you said, 'NO! Goddammit, Goddammit, Goddammit, GodDAMMit!'
We hid our laughter and waited for you to cool off a bit. But I sure did relate to you, Lily!

I've also wanted to tell you a few things that have been on my mind, Lily. I want you to listen carefully.
  • I'll love you forever and ever- to the moon and back and past the stars.
  • I hope to be such a constant in your life- someone you can trust to be steady and understanding and who tries to remember that you're a little person. You're your own.
  • I never want you to feel burdened or put-off by our family's situation. It's something that will make us all better people... and I hope so hard you don't look back when you're older and feel you got less than you should have of anything.
  • It's time to start using the big-girl-potty.
  • Your temper is impressive! I hope this fiery side of you serves you in your life.
  • I'll always be by your side. No matter what. No matter where.
 Love, Mommy.

Birthday wishes

Age 36 has come, and although I wasn't aware I had wishes, they seem to have come true. I got some time with my children, some much-needed time with Steve, and some time to clean and organize (weird, I know).
But wishes are funny things, aren't they? Sometimes I can't help but wish and other times I feel so silly doing so. Today Steve and I were driving listening to a story on NPR about a woman who'd been in an accident. She described all the therapies she'll need to endure - or get to endure- through the coming months and years and I said, 'I wish Rowan had that opportunity'. Isn't that funny, though. Wishing he had the opportunity to learn to walk, or to learn to do things. Maybe funny isn't the right word.
I guess what I'm trying to say is; life changes and your wishes adjust.  But this is true with everyone. No one has a perfect life without shifts and changes- happy times and sad times.  Everyone experiences pain. We're not immune from that- no one is.
I'm not scared. But adjustments take time- and orienting my brain and my heart to the changes that have occurred and preparing for the future sneaks up on me. Little by little we adjust. I suspect that's how everyone does it.
Here is where my heart is, though... always.

August and everything after

My friend, Jay, was kind enough to fix my broken computer.  Because of my good fortune in friend-selection, I can now upload pictures from my camera to this thing- so you can see what we've been doing since the Summer.
This will most certainly be a mish mosh- just so you know what to expect...
Our Rowan pre-diagnosis

Lily and Daddy carving a pumpkin for Halloween- they had such a great time

One September Sunday afternoon, Steve and I decided to take Lily for a special trip to an apple orchard in Minnesota.  We really enjoyed our one on one time with her.  She's sure a good girl.

Lil got to paint pumpkins

Grandma Joyce must have taken this picture of Rowan while he slept-

One of Grandma Joyce and Lily's special things is making crepes together.  Lil stirs the eggs, the flour and helps- and Grandma Joyce probably loves it even more.

Halloween:
This year, Lily wanted to be Felix the Cat for Halloween.  Steve and I were likely more eager than she was to go trick-or-treating with her.  I was a tad sad because I thought I'd stay with Rowan while Steve took her out- but Kate and Gene were kind enough to spend time with Rowan while we went out with Lil-everyone was happy.

And on to other things...

And Goofy Lily eating worms...
Life is good today- there was a benefit for Rowan yesterday, and I'll write more about that tomorrow. I want to give it the space it deserves... Good night!

baker, baker... make me a crepe.

This weekend Grandma and Grandpa Hammer came for a visit... Lily loves Grandma's crepes and helped stir.

She's a good helper with a sweet little voice.  She's been such a good kid through all of the recent changes; so patient with us.

We love you, Lily.

Letters to Lily

Wednesday, Oct 12, 2011
Dear Lily-
You've taken to screaming a lot lately.  I'm not too sure why... maybe you want to assert yourself? you want to be heard? or you just want to annoy me...
Regardless, you're a great kid.  You and daddy carved a pumpkin the other night because Halloween is fast approaching.  He takes it into your room and shuts off the lights so you guys can look at it glow.
You now have 5 ponies and like to carry them around with you. You're super creative and like to make up little stories about different characters; your mermaid, strawberry girls, cow, ponies, and others.  Everyone likes to hug each other and the like to say, 'help me, help me!'.
I sure do miss you when I'm at work- it's always the best part of my day; the picking you up part.  I speed over to Nikki's house and can't wait to see your smiling little face.
And I think I kind of miss you overall.  I feel like I haven't gotten to really spend time with you in weeks.  Maybe I just need to try to be more present when we are spending time together?
A lot has changed and you are unaware.  I hope to keep it that way for a while.

Love, Mommy

Friday, September 30, 2011

Dear Lily-
This morning I dropped you off at Nikki's house for daycare.  You didn't really want to go- wanted to stay home and play with your purple ponies I think.  You've been so great this past week travelling back and forth to the hospital with either me or daddy to see Rowan- or to switch off, rather.  You were especially tired last night and I felt terrible for that.  You had a hard time sleeping and woke up a bunch- you do that when you're over tired.
I just wanted you to know that I love you so much and know all of this with Rowan will affect you.  But your dad and I are convinced that going through this with us will help you to be a compassionate person...
We will make sure you get to do all the things you want and that your life is wonderful.  I'm not too sure why I'm writing this- probably mother's guilt, but I just wanted you to know that we love you so much.
I've missed you the past couple of weeks.

Love, Mommy

Dear Lily-
IMG_5503I've been thinking a lot lately about how I felt when I was pregnant with both you and with your brother.  I was wondering to myself if your personalities matched 'on the outside'. I remembered how you seemed to move and kick pretty regularly, like all babies do, I suspect... but that you seemed to get mad or frustrated at being trapped, or without room, and you'd have little tantrums.  You'd kick and kick relentlessly- and then you'd wear yourself out and rest.  It seems to match your personality today, too.  You are really so very smart and have such a sweet and interesting disposition.  But when you're mad, you're mad! You have a fiery little temper, but if you're frustrated it's over as soon as it's started.
I've found during these times that you mostly just want a hug.  You don't really like to get in trouble- it seems like you get embarrassed or like you feel bad... and I don't want you to feel bad, Lily.  It's ok to make mistakes.  (this is me worrying about you when you're older...) So, I just hug you and try to guide you in the ways I think are best.  I just try to love you through and through so you always know you can come to me.

I was also thinking of some of the funny things you say and wanted to remember them:
  • Watermelon = meller wadin
  • "Will you hold me, mommy?"= "Can I hold you, mommy?"
  • Dental floss = sloss
Love, Mommy

Monday, August 1  2011

Dear Lily-
I've recently started this blog as a way to save memories, pictures, stories, and my love for you.  I wish I had started it sooner... I hope these letters will chronicle your life and will help you to always remember that you are absolutely wonderful.  I love you so much.

I went back and found some pictures I think you'll love to see.  Some of the day you were born... I should tell you the story of the day you were born, now that I think of it!

You were due to be born on March 26, 2009.  Daddy and I were in Fargo, but there was some really terrible flooding going on, so all of the hospitals closed and evacuated their patients.  They said that we should go to a neighboring city either to have you or until the hospitals here in Fargo opened up again.  Your Aunt Emily and Uncle Rich live in Bismarck, and Aunt Emily is a nurse, so we decided to go stay there for a little while.  We loaded up all of our stuff, the dogs, and some baby clothes (just in case) and took off to Bismarck on your due date.  Before we left, though, we had to take the toilets up out of our house, close up the drains, and shut off the water in case it flooded.  It was a mess and kind of a mad dash to get out of town.  They were about to close all of the interstates, too!

We arrived in Bismarck, and I was huge! I was so ready to have you, but didn't know what to expect.  On Saturday, my mom and dad- your grandma and grandpa Mayer, came to Bismarck to see Steve and I.  It was almost Daddy's birthday, and we all went out to dinner.  I sure didn't feel very good, but I walked around the mall and tried to keep up with everyone.

That morning at about 3:00 AM I went into labor.  I woke your daddy up and we called the hospital in Bismarck to make sure they had all of my records from Fargo.  They did and told us to come right in.  My contractions came on very fast and I was starting to think you'd come soon!

We checked into the hospital and got all ready to have you.  I got into my gown and your daddy was by my side.  He held my hand and got me water to drink.  We were so nervous and excited.  There was a time during my labor with you that your heartbeat began to slow, so I had to change positions and we had to make sure you were getting enough oxygen.  Eventually the doctor came in and I started to try to push you out.  The doctor thought you were a big baby and you weren't coming as fast as he thought you should have.  He gave me an epesiotomy and had to help you get out with an instrument that suctioned you out.  You came soon enough, and the doctor laid you on my chest.  I wish I could describe that feeling, Lily... I had gone from only being able to feel you move and kick and wonder what you looked like to touching your warm, soft skin.  Your little voice squalked and you had the sweetest poutiest look on your face.  We cried and welcomed you and in an instant we were changed.

Grandma and Grandpa Mayer happened to still be in town, so they came over eventually- and Aunt Emily was there the whole time taking pictures!  We had you at 2:16 in the afternoon and it was so wonderful.  You were tiny; only 5 pounds 14 ounces.  The doctor was pretty wrong about your size... I think I was so chubby, he thought you were big!

The nurses made sure you were ok and the doctor made sure I was ok.  Then they moved us all to a family room so we could have some more space and could be together...A few hours after I had you I didn't feel very well.  I had to go into surgery, so Daddy stayed with you.  I was scared and Daddy was scared, but mommy's best friends, Leah, Lynnette, and Kirsten had driven all the way from Fargo to see you, so they stayed with Daddy.  Grandma Joyce was also there.

That night there was a terrible blizzard! Twenty inches of show! The girls got stuck in Bismarck and had to stay in a hotel room.  But they didn't care- they were so happy to meet you.

You, Daddy, and I stayed in our hospital room for a couple more days.  We held you and kissed you- I nursed you and changed your little diapers.  We think those were some of the best moments of our lives.  You were here, Lily, and our lives had changed.  Our hearts had changed... We were never the same again.

There is nothing your daddy and I wouldn't do for you.  We love you more than anything in this whole world, Lily.  You are wonderful.

Love, Mommy.
